Within the Life and Times of the Legendary Joe Cuba emerges an inspiring poet known as "Mariposa." She eulogized Joe Cuba with a dedication along with one of her most inspiring poems called "Ode to the DiaspoRican."
She wrote:

To the Legendary Joe Cuba:

Thank you for Boogaloo Bronx memories,

Dancin' to the aroma of

"Corn bread / hog maw / and chit-a-lins,"

With Mami in la sala.

Just one of many Mambo dancin' Palladium queens,

Likin' it like that! Swinging her hips to rhythms.

Born out of barrio born

Boricua hands

Groovin' to your deep baritone

Born out of your rich legacy,

Barrio stick ball kid / who played in the pump.

Harlemite / Jazz Warrior / Soul Brotha'

Lover of his Culture.

Dig it.

This one's for you:

Ode to the DiaspoRican (pa' mi gente)

Mira mi cara Puertorriqueña

Mi pelo vivo

Mis manos morenas

Mira mi corazon que se llena de orgullo

Y dime que no soy Boricua.

Some people say that I'm not the real thing

Boricua, that is

'cause I wasn't born on the enchanted island

'cause I was born on the mainland

north of Spanish Harlem

'cause I was born in the Bronx...

Some people think that I'm not bonafide

'cause my playground was a concret jungle

'cause my Rio grande de Loiza was the Bronx River

'cause my Fajardo was City Island

my Luquillo, Orchard Beach

and summer nights were filled with city noises

instead of coquis, and Puerto Rico

was just some paradise that we saw in pictures.

What does it mean to live in between?

What does it take to realize that being Boricua is

A state of mind
A state of heart
A state of soul.

No naci en Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico nacio en mi!

Mira mi cara Puertorriqueña

Mi pelo vivo
Mis manos morenas

Mira mi corazon que se llena de orgullo

Y di me que no soy Boricua.
Latin Musican Hector Lavoes Biography

While Hector Lavoe was alive, he was honored with celebrity status as the Singer of Singers, "El Cantante de Los Cantantes." In spite of the tragic elements of his life, many echoed the sentiment that he had achieved legendary fame in his own time. After his death Jose Perez was inspired to write his father’s biography with co-author Antonio Mejias in English and then in Spanish. Then in an effort to romanticize his story, an off Broadway musical play was written and opened in New York as, "Quien Mato a Hector Lavoe?" Although the play was very entertaining, their version was fictional, using Hector's lyrics as the base of their story. Then last year a dark version of Hector’s story came to the big screen as "El Cantante," with the renowned actress Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony. This movie only established the fact that no matter how fictional or dysfunctional his story is presented, Hector's legendary status is unquestionable. Now with new movie "The Untold Story of Hector Lavoe," a more humane Hector Lavoe is presented on the big screen. This movie stars the accomplished actor/vocalist Raul Carbonnell Jr. and co-stars La India. The difference in this story is how it embraces two important figures of Hector Lavoe’s life Carmen Castro and Jose Perez, Hector's first and only surviving son.
